We’re honored to showcase the diversity and breadth of talents and interests at AG Consulting Partners. This month, learn more about Principal, Michael Thomas, and his experience in the technology industry as well as his mycology hobby.
What is your background? Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the small town of Ephrata, Washington, and lived in Seattle for about ten years. Eight years ago, I moved to Spokane where I live now with my wife and our three sons. My professional background is mainly in the technology industry. Before working at AGCP, I was a solution architect for a Microsoft Partner focusing mostly on Azure as the cloud market developed around 2015. Currently, I support one of our global technology clients with their cloud onboarding program where we share with customers the program benefits, cloud onboarding best practices, and help them achieve their cloud initiatives. It’s a great role and provides a ton of opportunities to meet interesting folks, address complex scenarios, and make a positive difference for our clients.
What is your favorite part about working at AGCP?
The number one thing I love about AGCP is the people. There’s a unique balance between hard work and maintaining a positive attitude. Everyone puts in their time and delivers exceptional work for our clients while happily supporting others on our AGCP team. I’ve turned to my AGCP peers as resources on many occasions and everyone is always eager to help. Secondly, I would say the opportunities that AGCP offers its employees. We’re able to try so many new and cool things on our projects and stay on our projects long enough to not only make an impact but see it come to fruition and witness the impact of our hard work.
What are some of your interests outside of work?
I spend a lot of time outdoors with my family skiing and hiking. We just started teaching our sons how to ski and have enjoyed visiting the mountain this winter. Our extended family of nearly 20 people enjoys going on the Slide Rock hike together in the Priest Lake, Idaho area. It’s a rock formation that has been eroded by water over time and has become a natural waterslide. We hike up there as a family every year and it is breathtakingly beautiful.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
My family and I enjoy foraging mushrooms and are enthusiastic about mycology. We grow a variety of gourmet mushrooms such as oysters, reishi, and lion’s mane. Another thing many people don’t know about me is that I’m a trained chef and worked as a professional chef before getting my degree. I’ve enjoyed combining these two hobbies and often incorporate the mushrooms we grow into our meals.
Where is the best place you’ve traveled to and why?
My wife and I visited Paris on our honeymoon. As a trained chef, I wanted to explore the many restaurants and chefs of Paris. We enjoyed some amazing food on this trip, and I hope to go back as there simply wasn’t enough time to try all of the spectacular meals that Paris has to offer.
Do you have any favorite books?
It’s hard for me to pick just one as I’m an avid reader. I would say that the Dune series is my favorite in the sci-fi genre. I also read a lot of historical non-fiction and enjoy both Devil in the White City and Dead Wake.
