How do you make an impact at Make-A-Wish?

I volunteer as a wish-granter for Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington. This means that I choose a child whose wish I’d like to be involved in granting, then I’m partnered with another volunteer. Coordinating is a unique experience every time because it’s dependent on the child and their family. On average, they can take anywhere from three months to a year. Mine have each taken almost a year, and while it can be a lot of work, it’s also a lot of fun. Make-A-Wish covers all the financial support, and we coordinate the wish for the child and their family. For example, if a child wishes to go to Disneyland, Make-A-Wish handles all the details such as the hotels, flights, meals, and tickets to the park, while we keep the child excited about their wish and plan the wish celebration to send them off. We try adding unique touches to wishes, such as asking the pilot to announce the special passenger on board or creating a special theme that supports the wish to enhance the kids experience.

Why did you choose to volunteer at Make-A-Wish?

Make-A-Wish grants most of their wishes using donations of cash or frequent flier miles from people or organizations. A friend of mine invited me to attend their largest annual Wish Night Gala & Auction with her and some friends about six years ago. After meeting other volunteers and hearing their stories, I knew I wanted to become a wish-granter. It felt like one of those rare opportunities where you could volunteer your time and immediately see the positive impact you’ve made on the faces of kids and their families.

What’s your favorite part about volunteering for Make-A-Wish?

My favorite part about volunteering for Make-A-Wish is announcing to the child and their family that their wish has been granted. I love seeing the excitement on their faces when they realize their wish has come true. I’ll never forget one wish we fulfilled when we threw a Disney-themed wish reveal for a child with their favorite stuffed characters and announced they were going to Disneyland. Being able to offer these children and their families a chance to escape the challenges they face, even just for a little while, and create unforgettable memories together is a privilege beyond measure!  I have a passion for volunteering and would love for you to join me as a wish-granter so you can experience the magic of this mission, too. Reach out if you are interested or have questions.
